Double Oscar winning director, Lewis Milestone (Ocean's Eleven - All Quiet on the Western Front - The Purple Heart) directs this bleakly realistic war drama which was the inspiration for Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan and was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Film. A Walk in the Sun tells the harrowing story of the US Infantry platoon of Texas Division after they hit the beaches of Salerno, Italy, in 1943. In their first six hours their objective is to march six miles inland to a Nazi defended farmhouse and blow up a nearby bridge. Their mission is simple, but under Milestone's skilful direction A Walk in the Sun comes to symbolize all the small, simple missions which eventually culminated in the winning of the Second World War. The long quiet stretches of talk are dramatically punctuated by sudden, random bursts of violent action whose relevance to the big picture is often unknown to the soldiers, but give the viewer a sense of the reality of war. Dana Andrews gives a career-defining performance as the hard-nosed Sergeant Tyne who assumes command of his platoon, but the cast of Richard Conte, John Ireland, George Tyne and Lloyd Bridges are magnificent as the foot soldiers who are neither heroic nor gallant and who would rather be anywhere else in them world than the battlefield. Extras: Remastered Picture and Sound, Original Theatrical Trailer, Norman Lloyd on A Walk in the Sun; (61 Mins), The Men of A Walk in the Sun; (32 Mins), Stills Gallery.
